德蒙特福德大学新书发表:WOKING WITH BLACK YOUNG PEOPLE

A book looking at the issues facing Black young people is being launched by De Montfort University (DMU) academics this week.

Working with Black Young People looks at the problems facing the group and looks at strategies that can help them. It is believed to be the first-time one publication has looked at all the social issues facing the group.

The book has been edited by Momodou Sallah and Carlton Howson, both senior lecturers in DMU’s Youth and Community Division, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. It looks at young people of Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, African and African Caribbean origins and contributors include experts in areas such as criminal justice, youth work, housing, education and mental health.

Mr Howson said: “It is grounded in the experiences of people who have lived and worked in the UK; therefore it will resonate with people as they seek to make sense of how the historical impacts on the present.

“Working with Black young people will form an important addition to libraries and will assist practitioners, parents and young people from diverse backgrounds and experiences as they attempt to find both reasons and solutions in working with Black young people.”

Mr Sallah said: “Black people are negatively overrepresented in many social areas such as education, health and housing. For example, African Caribbean schoolboys are five times more likely to be excluded from school. When they start school they are at the higher level of attainment but by the time they are about to leave school they have dropped to the lowest achieving group.

“What we wanted to do with the book, was look at the reasons why these things might be happening and forming strategies to help change the situations.

“I think the book will be useful to anyone, for example teachers, social workers, and all those who work with Black young people. It could challenge the way they think about how they work with them.”

Working with Black Young People has been published by Russell House Publishing. It will be launched at Borders, Fosse Park, near Leicester at 7.30pm on Friday, 21 September. The editors and contributors will be available to sign copies.
