The University of East Anglia is one of four UK universities launching an innovative new interdisciplinary science degree today.

Endorsed by the Institute of Physics, the Integrated Sciences course brings together physics, chemistry and mathematics, providing students with a thorough grounding in the sciences.

The course is being launched today at UEA and also the universities of Leicester, Surrey and London South Bank. The first intake will start in September 2008. At UEA, Integrated Sciences is one of the possible pathways through the prestigious Natural Sciences degree.

It is hoped that the course will appeal to students interested in science but not wanting to specialise in just one subject at degree level. Graduates will find themselves well prepared to go on to more specialist studies including a four-year integrated masters degree in physics or chemistry.

Prof Karen Heywood, course director of Natural Sciences at UEA, said: 揑t is a good thing that there is a blurring of the boundaries between different scientific disciplines. Students shouldn抰 feel restricted to a single subject if their interests are broader than that. It can be exciting to work where more than one science comes together.

揊or instance, the climate system is not just about physics, and not just about chemistry, you need to understand both if you抮e going to make a prediction about future climate.?br/>
Underpinning the course is the idea that new global challenges will increasingly require a scientifically literate workforce. Tackling climate change is one example and will require people with varied skills.

In addition, industries such as energy production, construction, entertainment and communications have all seen radical changes in what society expects from them. Businesses will only capitalise on emerging opportunities if they have staff with the skills necessary to innovate and adapt.

Peter Main, director of education and science at the Institute of Physics, said: 揑n the 21st century, there will be an increasing need to develop scientists with cross-disciplinary expertise. The new degrees are tailored to producing such graduates, while retaining the possibility of them specialising in the later years of their courses.?br/>
