Glasgow Caledonian University has been awarded £59,802 by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation to undertake a UK-wide, six month study to explore the role of the media in reflecting and shaping public opinion on poverty. The research is part of a wider programme of work by the JSF to better understand attitudes to poverty in the UK, influences upon them and also to support the development of more inclusive and informed debate about poverty in the UK. The project will involve content analysis of 150 media sources, coverage tracking of 8 poverty news stories, examination of the presentation of poverty in fictional media (such as soap operas) and reality television, interviews with key informants responsible for producing media accounts of poverty and focus groups to explore how the UK public responds to media representations of poverty. The work will be undertaken by a team of experienced researchers from the Scottish Poverty Information Unit and the Cultural Business Group. Led by Dr. John McKendrick (Director, Scottish Poverty Information Unit), the team will comprise Professor Gill Scott, Dr. Stephen Sinclair and Louise Dobbie of the Scottish Poverty Information Unit and Professor Hugh O’Donnell and Dr. Anthea Irwin from the Cultural Business Group. Dr. McKendrick said: “We are delighted to have been selected by JRF to undertake this important research. While we commend the UK Government and Scottish Executive for their ambitions to eradicate child poverty within a generation and to tackle social exclusion in the UK, we believe that full public support is required to underpin any anti-poverty strategy. Our work aims to understand the pivotal role of the media in reflecting and shaping public ideas of poverty in contemporary UK.” The project starts on July 1st.
