London South Bank University brings the countryside to the inner city

Over 500 local residents visited London South Bank University this Saturday, to see the transformation of Keyworth Street. The road, which runs through the heart of the campus, was covered with lush green grass and hay bales. The transformation was in honour of ‘The Village Fête’, a free event staged for people who live, work and study in the local area.

The event was the first of its kind at LSBU, and provided an opportunity for people to visit the campus to find out what the University is all about in a fun and non-intimidating environment.

Local residents of all ages were treated to free entertainment, with performances from local acts including South London Jazz Orchestra and Carnaval du Pueblo. There were also opportunities for guests to take part in some interactive educational activities such as a mock forensic crime scene and an engineering workshop.

London South Bank University is a major presence in Southwark, with around 19,000 students and almost 2,000 staff on its Elephant & Castle campus. Many of those students and staff live in the local area and interact with local businesses, schools and community groups and residents on a daily basis. LSBU staged The Village Fête, as an acknowledgement of how important it considers these community relationships to be.

The event was the first of its kind at LSBU and the University’s aim was to offer an opportunity for people to visit the campus to find out what the University is all about in a fun and non-intimidating environment. As well as the free entertainment and activities on offer, there were staff on hand at the event to answer questions about the University.

As part of the University’s commitment to the environment, the Village Fête was a sustainable event. Outdoor activities were powered by a bio-diesel generator and suppliers were sourced locally. All hay and grass was replanted after the event or donated to the local city farm.
