A lecturer from the School of Pharmacy at RGU has been awarded a grant worth £210,456 from the Engineering and Physical Research Council, UK (EPSRC) to develop materials which will lead to more effective identification of disease and development of treatments in the future.

The grant will enable Dr John Callan to carry out a project to develop a replacement for organic dye based biosensors. Biosensors are critical in the identification of abnormal events occurring within cells, and play a key role in the development of new treatments and therapies.

The project will involve using inorganic materials called Quantum Dots as a replacement for organic dyes in the development of new biosensors. Dr Callan explained how these would facilitate a more efficient analysis of cells:
"Quantum Dots are a relatively new class of fluorescent compounds which have superior optical properties when compared to traditional organic dyes. By taking advantage of these properties we will be able to construct a multianalyte probe which will allow us to analyse ions such as sodium, potassium and calcium simultaneously. This is currently not possible using organic dye based sensors."

Dr Callan concluded, "I am delighted to have been successful in securing this funding, as it will enable us to make real progress with this work. It is also encouraging to know that the national funding councils are keen to support pharmacy research at RGU."

The grant will be used to fund a postdoctoral research fellow for two years.
