Exeter is one of the UK’s most popular and successful universities with the Streatham campus widely regarded as one of the most attractive in Britain.

There are 13,500 students across three campuses (two in Exeter, one in Cornwall), of whom 3,500 are postgraduates. The Peninsula Medical School, a partnership between the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, took its first students of medicine in October 2002. A new £28 million Peninsula Dental School will open in October 2007.

Ninety-eight per cent of subject areas were rated 4, 5 or 5* (of national or international standing) in the 2001 RAE. Under the leadership of Professor Steve Smith, who was appointed Vice-Chancellor in 2002, the University is investing heavily in new academic appointments and facilities with the aim of being among the top 20 research-intensive universities by 2010.

Research grant awards soared by just under 70% in 2004-5 and income from business rose by almost 40%. Fifteen new Anniversary Chairs have attracted world-class scholars to Exeter and a total of 112 new academic staff appointments will have been made by autumn 2006. A further reflection of the growing stature and reputation of research at Exeter is the appointment of 12 of our academic staff as panel members in the forthcoming 2008 RAE.

Exeter is among the top universities in the UK for student satisfaction, ranked joint 10th nationally for overall satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2005. Our results place us in the top 25% of UK universities for learning resources (scoring particularly well on IT resources) and for course organisation and management.

The University is in the midst of an investment programme worth over £140 million, including a £1m major revamp of the students’ union building and nightclub. £38 million has been invested in new student accommodation and £8m in sports facilities making Exeter’s facilities amongst the best in the country.

Amongst traditional research-led universities, Exeter offers an exceptionally wide range of opportunities for its students to develop personally and professionally, from management training to business placements, one of the UK’s largest student volunteering and pre-teacher training programmes to a world-wide network of study abroad opportunities.

The University has excellent links with business and community organisations and aims to integrate these into all its work. Staff in all disciplines are encouraged to build partnerships with external organisations to enhance and support their teaching and research and to act entrepreneurially in order to develop commercially relevant intellectual property, consultancy and professional development services. Each year, over 700 projects are undertaken with a value of around £10m. The University Innovation Centre provides a dedicated support team helping academic staff and students to link their knowledge and experience to communities of practice and the business world.
