Throughout its history the University has built upon its distinctive characteristics. Today Loughborough is world renowned for its excellence in teaching and research, strong links with industry, and unrivalled sporting achievement.
Loughborough University dates from 1909, when a small Technical Institute was established on Green Close Lane in Loughborough. It was set up by Leicestershire County Council to provide local facilities for further education and offered courses in technical subjects, science and art.
During the First World War part of the Technical Institute became an Instructional Factory for the Ministry of Munitions. In addition to normal teaching, the institute trained over 2,000 men and women for the munitions industry, making shell cases and machine parts in its workshops.
The transformation of the Technical Institute into what became known as Loughborough College was mainly due to the achievements of Dr Herbert Schofield, who was Principal from 1915 to 1950. In 1918 he began to acquire land on the Burleigh Estate, where the University now stands. This land was used to build the Rutland and Hazlerigg halls of residence, the athletics stadium and sports pavilion, a sports hall and an open-air swimming pool.
In 1952 the College was divided into four separate institutions: the Engineering Departments became Loughborough College of Technology; the teacher training activities became Loughborough Teacher Training College, renamed Loughborough College of Education in 1963; the Arts and Crafts Department became Loughborough College of Art and Design; and the Department of Continuative Education became Loughborough Technical College. The College of Technology offered almost exclusively advanced courses in engineering and applied science, and in 1957 it was designated a College of Advanced Technology.
The next eight years saw considerable growth and the development of many new academic and residential buildings, including the Edward Herbert Building and the Students’ Village between 1961 and 1962.
In October 1963 the Robbins Report on Higher Education recommended that Colleges of Advanced Technology should be designated as technological universities. This recommendation was accepted by successive governments and on 19 April 1966 Loughborough University of Technology became Britain’s first technological university, with Dr Herbert Haslegrave as its first Vice Chancellor.
Renamed Loughborough University in 1996, the University celebrated the 40th anniversary of it receiving its Charter in 2006. During this time the University has gone from strength to strength. It now has more than 12,000 full-time students, and the purchase of Holywell Park in 2003 has made Loughborough one of the biggest campuses in the country, with 175 hectares of land.
